Dr. Brian Povolny believes in earning his patient's trust through listening, communicating, and striving to meet their goals. His education has given him a strong foundation and the training necessary to provide his patients with the highest quality of care. Brian has maintained a private practice in orthodontics for 20 years.

In late 2018, Dr. Povolny joined the Smart Orthodontic Group, a regional alliance of highly skilled, patient-focused orthodontists. Joining with the Smart Orthodontic group deepened the range of resources available to Brian's patients while continuing the amazing care and results he has been committed to throughout his career.

Education
Dr. Brian Povolny completed his entire education at the University of Washington and earned the following degrees:

Bachelor of Science (BS), 1973
Doctorate of Dental Surgery (DDS), 1982
Master of Science in Dentistry (MSD, Orthodontics), 1989
Doctorate of Philosophy (Ph.D.), 1991

Continuing education
Continuing education is just as important as having an excellent traditional orthodontic education. Says Dr. Povolny, "The treatments and techniques used in orthodontics are constantly changing, and it’s important to me that I stay up-to-date so that I can offer my patients the most advanced treatment options available. I attend and lecture at numerous continuing education courses each year, assuring that I am well informed about all emerging elements of orthodontics."

Professional Associations

Dr. Povolny is a member of the following professional associations: American Association of Orthodontists, Pacific Coast Society of Orthodontists, King County Dental Society, Washington State Dental Society, and the American Dental Association.

Personal

Staying active in his community is an important aspect of Dr. Povolny's life. He says, "I was initially drawn to orthodontics after seeing a population without access to orthodontic care on the Navajo reservation. Since then, I have established a school fluoride rinse program on Navajo reservations. I also sponsor Water First, the Smile Train, and have worked at the Children’s Home Society." He is a native of Cleveland, Ohio and has been a Seattle resident for the past 40 years. Brian has one lovely daughter, Mariel, who is in Middle School, and a cat named Mango. When he is not in the office, he can be found watching his daughter’s sports and activities and staying active outdoors. Dr. Povolny enjoys skiing, climbing, windsurfing, and scuba diving.
